The AR604 strain is located within the plant tissues and produces high levels of alkaloids, such as ergovaline and lolines. These substances make the grass unattractive to birds, which allows for a reduction in their numbers at facilities such as airports and sports grounds.
The endophyte can be introduced into various tall fescue varieties and is transmitted vertically through seeds, provided they are stored correctly. Grass containing this strain is not intended for livestock grazing due to the toxicity of the produced ergovaline.
