The Sweet Flame variety is studied in scientific papers focused on the chemical composition of arugula, in particular the glucosinolate content. Studies show that leaf extracts of this variety possess biological activity.
The plant exhibits an in vitro fungistatic effect against the oomycetes Phytophthora citrophthora, Phytopythium vexans, and Phytopythium chamaehyphon, which affect kiwifruit. This property is due to the presence of specific secondary metabolites.
