The plant is a random mutation discovered in a group of unidentified Ficus specimens. The exact species of the parent plant has not been established; it is presumably related to the subgenus Urostigma, section Americana. The characteristics of the variety are maintained through propagation by cuttings.

The plant has characteristic pubescence of its parts, from which the name Velvet originated. It is used as a decorative potted plant for interior landscaping; in warm climates, it can develop as a tree in the open field.
