The Discovery variety, also known by the trade name John Mitchell, is a deciduous shrub. Its main distinctive feature is variegation: young leaves have a green center and a wide, bright yellow margin.
The plant has an upright crown shape with arching branches. In UK conditions, the variety is classified as fully hardy with an H5 frost resistance rating.
Golden-yellow flowers densely cover the branches in early spring before the leaves appear. The variety is used exclusively for ornamental purposes.
