The variety was bred in Italy during a breeding program aimed at creating plants adapted to the conditions of the south of the country. In scientific literature, Egla is mentioned as an object for experiments on micropropagation, plant regeneration in vitro, and genetic transformation.
Within the framework of laboratory research, the variety was used to study methods of introducing genes for resistance to fungal diseases using Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Plant stipules were successfully used for in vitro propagation processes.
