The variety appeared as a chance seedling discovered around 1900 near Norfolk, Virginia. It was widely used in commercial production in the first half of the 20th century, especially in the southern states, due to its low chilling hour requirements.
The berries have a conical shape and a dark crimson color; fruit size varies from medium to large. The firmness of the flesh depended on the growing region, and in modern comparative trials in temperate climates, the variety shows low yield.
The variety played an important role in American breeding, becoming a parent of such varieties as Blakemore and Florida 90. At present, it is primarily of value as historical genetic material for the conservation of biodiversity.
