The variety was bred as a result of a selection program based on the study of varieties from Japan and northern China, with the aim of creating cold-resistant and early-maturing forms. Bråvalla belongs to maturity group 000 according to international classification and possesses tolerance to northern climate conditions (approx. 58° N).
The crop was studied in the context of biological nitrogen fixation, which requires the use of specific Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains for full growth in Swedish soils. The purpose of the variety included both its use as a fodder base and its application for food purposes.
