The Drina variety was developed by specialists at the Agricultural Institute in Osijek using hybridization. For many years, it was used as a control standard in breeding trials and became widespread in the eastern regions of Croatia.

The plant belongs to the first maturity group. The variety is characterized as a stable genotype adapted to local agroecological conditions.
