The Airelle hybrid represents one of the first commercial breeding developments of INRA. During the period of active adoption in the 1970s, it was characterized as a high-yielding hybrid, surpassing the existing population varieties in yield performance at that time.
The plant is susceptible to downy mildew Plasmopara halstedii due to the absence of resistance genes to this pathogen. Because of this feature, the variety is actively used in scientific research as a control sample for assessing the aggressiveness of infections.
