The Edgar spring barley variety was created during joint breeding efforts of Polish research institutions. Today, the variety is considered historically significant and is used mainly as part of genetic resource collections for studying progress in plant breeding.
In scientific literature, the variety is mentioned in the context of research on resistance to fungal pathogens. It also appears in breeding materials as a specimen tested for the absence of Barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV).
