The Hiland variety is a six-row barley obtained by crossing the breeding line Ezond W-3 with the Frontier variety. The plant is characterized by a mid-early maturity group and possesses a sufficiently strong straw, ensuring good lodging resistance.
The ear of this variety has semi-awned formations that are easily detached during threshing, which minimizes the risk of injury to animals when using the grain as feed. The grain is distinguished by a thin husk and high test weight.
The variety shows resistance to certain races of loose smut, ergot, and bacterial blight. It is traditionally used as a high-yielding feed crop, best adapted to the conditions of irrigated agriculture.
