The spring barley variety Union, also known as Firlbeck’s Union, was bred by the German company Firlbeck and occupied a significant share of sown areas in Germany in the 1960s. Traditionally, the variety is classified as malting.
In modern scientific practice, this barley is used in genetic research, in particular as a carrier of specific 5H chromosome haplotypes, and is also used as a standard when evaluating nitrogen accumulation processes and dry matter distribution in grain.
