The Varunda variety is used in global practice as a differential sample for phytopathological tests, in particular for the identification of barley stem rust races. It is also in demand in genetic research for compiling genetic maps and studying vernalization loci, such as VRN-H1.
The plant possesses specific reactions to pathogens, showing resistance to some rust races and susceptibility to others, which allows it to be used for determining the virulence of Puccinia striiformis fungal isolates. Agronomic indicators, such as plant height, yield, and vegetation periods, are not described in scientific literature due to the variety's lack of status as a commercial crop.
