The Barrier 1 rootstock, also known as Empyrean 1, is a vigorous hybrid of Prunus persica and Prunus davidiana. Its root system provides trees with high resistance to lodging, and the rootstock itself is adapted to difficult alkaline soils where standard peach seedlings are prone to chlorosis.
Trees grafted onto this rootstock are distinguished by high yield and good fruit size; however, a delay in ripening of 5–7 days and a tendency toward lower sugar content in the flesh are observed. The rootstock demonstrates reliability under "replant disease" conditions and is potentially suitable for sites with excessive soil moisture.
