The variety is a hybrid of Impatiens hawkeri. Its key morphological feature is the red coloration of the underside of the leaf blade, while the upper side of the leaf has no variegation.

The plant is used in ornamental floriculture as a potted crop for containers and flowerpots. The variety is significant as historical breeding material used to establish standards for New Guinea impatiens.
