The plant is known as an orchid balsam. It is characterized by velvety dark green leaves with a contrasting bright pink central vein. The growth habit is often described as elongated, resembling a palm.

Flowering in home conditions occurs rarely. The flowers have an unusual shape, resembling a snapdragon or an orchid. Rooting of cuttings can be difficult.
