Jatropha podagrica is a deciduous succulent shrub reaching a height of 1.5–2 meters. A characteristic feature of the species is a thickened bottle-shaped stem base and large 3–5-lobed peltate leaves.

The plant's flowers are small, bright red or orange-red, gathered in inflorescences on long peduncles. The plant contains milky sap that causes skin irritation and is considered toxic if ingested. The primary use of the species is ornamental gardening.
