For plants sold under this trade name, the following characteristics are typical: bush height is 20–30 cm, leaves have an ovate shape and dark green color. The diameter of the flowers varies between 2–2.5 cm.

The name Red African is also often erroneously applied to other succulents, including Euphorbia trigona rubra, Kalanchoe sexangularis, and some species of Osteospermum, which creates significant confusion in plant identification.
