The variety was bred by the method of clone selection, chosen based on the results of three-year trials under turf management conditions. The source material consisted of Poa chaixii ecotypes growing in Northern Europe. The plant is a perennial, densely tufted grass, 15 to 60 cm in height, forming narrow, upright, straw-colored panicles.
The purpose of the variety is for use as a turfgrass. During trials, Barkoel demonstrated high turf quality indicators under low-input management and outperformed wild populations in salt tolerance. The variety is not intended for the restoration of natural plant communities.
