The Seneca variety belongs to the multileaf type lettuce category, which implies the formation of a large number of leaves. Breeding was aimed at obtaining a plant with increased resistance to downy mildew and the absence of tip burn.
The variety was developed by Rijk Zwaan during breeding work that included crossing with a line resistant to Bremia lactucae. The plant underwent comparative testing according to UPOV descriptors for the Lactuca sativa crop.
