The plant belongs to the asparagus variety of lettuce intended for producing a succulent stem suitable for consumption in raw, boiled, stewed, or pickled form. Young leaves are also used for food.
Stems reach a height of 20 to 60 cm. Harvesting is usually carried out when 15–20 leaves are present. The crop is prone to rapid bolting, which is a species-specific trait.
The variety is considered hardy; however, during the summer period, plants can be susceptible to downy mildew. Agrotechnology is aimed at forming a high-quality thickened stem before the onset of active flowering.
