The variety is a hybrid obtained by crossing Leucadendron salignum and Leucadendron laureolum. The plant is cultivated for the spectacular bracts surrounding the inflorescences, which are commonly referred to as cones in professional circles.

Plants of this genus prefer full sun exposure and well-drained acidic soils. They are sensitive to excessive moisture, which creates a risk of root system death.
