Compact, densely branched shrub 0.6–1.2 meters in height. Possesses the ability to produce root suckers, due to which it can be used as a groundcover plant. Leaves are compound, odd-pinnate, with spiny-serrated margins; in spring they have a bronze-red tint, in summer they become shiny dark green, and in winter they acquire a red-brown color.
Blooms abundantly in April with yellow flowers gathered in dense inflorescences. Fruits are blue-black berries. The plant is frost-hardy, resistant to powdery mildew and rust, adapted to urban conditions, and undemanding to soils. Prefers semi-shaded planting sites.
