The variety originated as a chance seedling in the USA. Trees are vigorous; the crown shape changes with age from narrow-oval to broadly rounded. There are over 40–50 clones of this variety, selected primarily for the intense red coloration of the fruits.

Fruits are large, with a characteristic conical shape with five tubercles at the calyx. The flesh is cream or white, juicy and aromatic, with low acid content. The variety has excellent transportability, but it is demanding regarding growing conditions and has low winter hardiness.
