Perennial herbaceous plant with a multi-headed rhizome and quadrangular stems that become woody at the base. Plant height is 0.4–0.6 m, in some cases reaching 0.8 m. Stems are covered with greyish felt-like pubescence.
Leaves are grey-green, broad, ovate or rounded, with dense pubescence on the underside, which gives them a characteristic wrinkled appearance. Small white flowers are gathered in false whorls in the leaf axils. The flowering period lasts from June to September.
The plant is undemanding to soils. For commercial cultivation, light, permeable and loose soils rich in nutrients are preferred.
