The variety originated from the natural adaptation of lucerne populations introduced to Australia, primarily in the alluvial valleys of the Hunter and Peel rivers. Until 1977, it was the main cultivated lucerne variety in Australia and long served as the standard for comparison with other varieties.
The plant is classified as a winter-active variety. The variety lacks resistance to pests such as spotted alfalfa aphid, which has limited its current cultivation. In modern agronomy, it is more often used as a benchmark for productivity in research trials.
