The variety was developed within the framework of US breeding programs in the 1970s–1990s. The main objective during development was to increase plant resistance to damage by the alfalfa weevil (Hypera postica).
Studies revealed a certain degree of tolerance to the pest in the variety, however, it was insufficient to eliminate chemical treatments. Furthermore, the variety was characterized by susceptibility to a number of diseases, including stem nematodes, Verticillium wilt, and root rots.
