The variety belongs to the spearmint species Mentha spicata var. crispata. The plant possesses the wrinkled, curled leaves characteristic of this variety.

Unlike peppermint, the variety is characterized by a low menthol content and a predominance of carvone in its composition. This accounts for the sweetish aroma of the plant and the absence of a pronounced cooling effect upon use.
