The variety was obtained as a result of interspecific hybridization with the wild species Nicotiana debneyi, which ensured resistance to black root rot Thielaviopsis basicola. HTR2 belongs to the Virginia flue-cured tobacco type.

The plant is a cytoplasmically male-sterile variety that was actively used in breeding programs as a component for creating hybrids. It was used in studies aimed at investigating the composition of alkaloids and reducing the content of nitrosamines.

The variety is intended for curing methods characteristic of the Virginia tobacco group. In the past, it was in demand among planters, however, detailed morphological descriptions and data on vegetation periods in open reviews are limited.
