The Europa variety belongs to the japonica rice group and is traditionally used in Southern European cuisine. At the end of the 20th century, this variety was widely distributed in Italy, where its cultivation areas reached 13 000 hectares.

Grain quality studies showed an amylose content of about 19.7%. The variety is mentioned in literature as significant for Italian rice farming; in particular, the Osmancık-97 variety was developed by crossing the Rocca and Europa varieties.
