Sesiamochi belongs to old Italian-bred varieties developed between 1850 and 1962. The variety is classified as waxy rice with round grain, rarely found in Italian agriculture.

The plant is used in research on field resistance to the fungus Pyricularia grisea, which causes rice blast, as well as in the study of susceptibility to the nematode Aphelenchoides besseyi, the causative agent of white tip disease of rice. The variety is included in the collection of the national rice authority of Italy, which preserves the genetic pool.
