The variety belongs to the Pelargonium zonale group and is known primarily within the framework of official breeding registers and phytosanitary studies. In official UPOV variety testing guidelines, "Penlau" is used as an example for describing morphological flower traits, in particular, the presence of stripes on the lower petal.
In scientific literature, the variety is mentioned in the context of work on the sanitation of planting material. In particular, it was used as an object for testing thermotherapy and meristem culture methods in the control of Pelargonium flower-break virus.
