The variety is a compact plant 5–10 cm in height with an upright growth habit. The leaves have an elliptical or oval shape, distinguished by a smooth shiny surface and entire margins.

The name Smaragd is often used in the horticultural trade as a commercial designation for decorative forms of Peperomia, sometimes identified with the species Peperomia caperata. Due to the popularity of the name, it is also encountered in other plant species, for example, in Thuja occidentalis.
