Blaue Meerbarbe is a vigorous pole plant reaching a height of 200–300 cm, which requires support. The variety belongs to the mid-season maturity group: the harvest is collected 85–100 days after sowing. The plant is undemanding, but sensitive to shading and soil drying, which affects yield.

The pods are semi-stringless, thin, about 18 cm long, and have a pale lilac or violet-blue color. The flowers are colored in an orange-apricot shade. Small kidney-shaped or elongated seeds have a bright blue color when freshly harvested, which changes to dark gray, brown, or black during storage.
