The plant belongs to the species Physalis pubescens, not to the vegetable groundcherry. The stems are creeping, with a length of 50–70 cm, although descriptions of more compact, dwarf forms also exist. The variety is characterized as cold-hardy.
Berries have a mass of 5–10 g and a diameter of 6–12 mm, containing up to 9% sugars. Due to the high concentration of pectin, the fruits are used primarily for desserts: jams, preserves, candied fruits, and jelly; they are also consumed fresh and dried.
