Brun Ært fra Nakskov is a traditional local variety originating from the North Lolland region. It is a tall plant, reaching 1.5–2 meters in height, with dense foliage which helps it suppress weeds; however, the variety is prone to lodging.
The pea seeds have a characteristic reddish-brown color and a wrinkled surface. The variety is not used fresh, as it is intended for drying and subsequent preparation of soups or hummus. When cooked, the peas retain their shape well and do not turn into mush.
In terms of agricultural practice, the variety is often grown in mixtures with other crops, such as oats, which can serve as support for its stems. The variety is registered as an object for the conservation of genetic diversity.
