The variety belongs to the smooth-seeded pea type and is often mentioned in literature as a synonym or close analogue of the Alaska variety. Traditionally, the variety was used in the food industry for canning purposes.
In scientific literature, Express Alaska is widely used as a model organism for studying plant physiology, the effects of growth regulators, and mechanisms of response to phytopathogens, in particular to the bacterium Rhodococcus fascians, which causes fasciation.
