The plant forms ovate basal leaves with wavy margins. The flowers have a characteristic structure resembling nested corollas and a deep maroon color.
For cultivation, partially shaded areas with moist, well-drained soil at a pH level of 6.0–7.0 are preferred. The plant is characterized by high winter hardiness corresponding to USDA zones 3–8.
Agronomic practices include regular deadheading of faded inflorescences to extend the flowering period and division of the bush every 4–5 years. With poor air circulation, fungal diseases are possible, and in conditions of high humidity, damage by slugs.
