The plant is a vigorous deciduous tree 4 to 10 meters tall with smooth, thin shoots. Leaves are dark green, oblong-ovate or lanceolate, 5–12 cm long, with finely serrated margins. Flowers are solitary, 2.5–3 cm in diameter, with petal colors ranging from white to pink.
Flowering occurs very early, between February and April. Fruits are spherical, about 3 cm in diameter, yellowish, tomentose-pubescent, and ripen in July. They are edible, though they lack high nutritional value due to the dryness of the flesh and low palatability.
The species possesses high winter hardiness, withstanding temperatures from −23 to −34 °C, and resistance to a number of diseases and pests of cultivated peach. In breeding, it is used as a source of genetic material for improving peach varieties.
