Rhododendron yakushimanum variety «Morgenrot» is a compact shrub with a dense spherical or flattened-spherical crown shape. An adult plant reaches 1–1.5 meters in height with a comparable width. The plant's leaves are evergreen, dark green and dense.
The funnel-shaped flowers have a red-pink hue in the bud, lightening to a pink color upon opening. The petals have a wavy edge, and dark red speckles are located on the upper petal. The flowers are gathered in inflorescences of 10–13 pieces.
The variety possesses winter hardiness corresponding to zones 5–6 and withstands temperatures from -18°C to -24°C. The plant is intended for open field cultivation and is used in group and individual decorative plantings.
