The plant reaches 2–4 meters in height. It is characterized by twisted zigzag branches and compound pinnate leaves, which have a light green hue when emerging and turn golden yellow in the autumn. Flowering is rare and irregular, presented by fragrant white flowers in racemes.
The variety is winter hardy (USDA zones 3–9), possesses high drought tolerance and the ability to fix nitrogen. Prefers well-drained soils. The plant is sensitive to strong winds, which can damage its twisted branches. All parts of the plant are considered toxic if ingested.
