The plant is upright, vigorous and branching. Young shoots are reddish-green and smooth, with large, downward-curved thorns present on the stems.

The leaves are large, medium-green, with a pointed-oval shape, glossy surface and serrated edges. The bud is described as long and pointed-ovoid.
