Tomato variety Gran merito, also known in variants Gran Merito 2 and 3, is a tall indeterminate plant, although some varieties are characterized by determinate properties and a height of about 90–100 cm. The ripening period is usually about 90 days, however, for individual versions, earlier periods of 65–75 days are indicated.

The red fruits have an elongated plum-like shape resembling a pepper. The flesh contains few seeds and little liquid, and yellow-green coloring may appear on the fruits near the stalk. The variety is demanding in terms of agricultural practice and requires intensive nutrition to achieve yield.

The variety belongs to the paste tomato group and is closely related to the San Marzano Gigante line. Due to the dense structure of the flesh, the fruits are used primarily for preparing sauces, coulis, and canning, not requiring prolonged boiling down.
