Variety description

10 August 2026

Piennolo del Vesuvio represents a collection of local landraces traditionally grown on volcanic soils. Plants are indeterminate, reaching 1.5–2 meters in height in the open field. Fruits are small, weighing 15–40 g, oval-shaped with a characteristic pointed tip and noticeable ribs near the stem.

A distinctive feature is the very firm, thick skin and meaty flesh with a low juice content. The variety is valued for its intense sweet taste with mineral notes and unique keeping quality: fruits can be stored for up to 6–7 months while hung in dry rooms.

The variety is hardy, tolerates heat well, and possesses high resistance to a range of diseases, including Fusarium wilt and leaf mold. The name Piennolo translates from the Neapolitan dialect as "hanging," which reflects the traditional method of preserving the harvest in bunches.
