The College Challenger variety is of Australian origin and is an heirloom variety obtained by crossing the Grosse Lisse and Tatura varieties. The plant is of the indeterminate type, reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 meters, and requires tying or supports.

The fruits of this variety have an oblate-round shape, red color, sweet juicy taste with low acidity, and possess good keeping quality. The variety is intended for fresh consumption in salads and sandwiches.

In American breeding descriptions from 1986, another F1 hybrid named Challenger is recorded, obtained by crossing the Red Cloud and Jubilee varieties. This hybrid is characterized by vigorous growth and high fruit resistance to cracking.
