The De Penjar group includes local varieties common in the eastern part of Spain. The plants are of an indeterminate type and are traditionally grown in open field. The fruits are usually small, weighing 30–90 g, round or oblong in shape, having dense flesh, thick skin and a small number of seed chambers.
A key feature of these tomatoes is an altered ripening process, allowing the fruits to be stored in bunches in cool rooms for several months. Varieties of this group are adapted to the Mediterranean climate and do not require intensive irrigation. Due to their high dry matter content and texture, the fruits are traditionally used for rubbing on bread, preparing sauces, and canning.
