The Elgon variety is classified as a pure line. Agricultural research notes its ability to accumulate sucrose in fruits up to a level of 4.3% when exposed to water stress.

The variety possesses resistance to fungal diseases, in particular to Fusarium oxysporum, as well as to Verticillium wilt (races 1 and 2).
