The variety is a traditional local crop from the municipality of Villa del Prado. It is not the result of classical breeding, but belongs to folk varieties that are being restored and studied by the Madrid Institute for Rural, Agricultural and Food Research and Development.

Tomatoes of this variety possess distinct organoleptic characteristics and are widely used in cooking, in particular for preparing gazpacho. Research work on the variety includes the study of nutritional value and microscopic characteristics of the fruit epidermis related to cracking resistance.
