The variety belongs to the group of local 'Tomàtiga de Ramellet' tomatoes from the island of Mallorca. These plants are characterized by their long-storage capability, provided by the presence of the specific alcobacça (alc) mutation.

The Santanyi variety has been used as an object in scientific research and in distinctness, uniformity, and stability testing procedures, during which its reaction to pathogens was studied in comparison with other varieties.
