The Tombolino tomato variety is featured in a number of seed catalogs as a hybrid variety with small fruits weighing from 25 to 30 grams. In addition to amateur gardening, the name appears in specialized literature studying the influence of irrigation regimes and soil salt levels on tomato characteristics and yield.

There is a possibility of phonetic confusion with another variety — the early-maturing cherry hybrid Strombolino F1, which is characterized by short stature, disease resistance, and suitability for transport. Direct information regarding the breeding of the Tombolino variety by the Portuguese company Alípio Dias e Irmão, Lda has not been recorded in available publications.
